Best South Shore Towns for Boston Commuters: Where to Live, What to Pay, and How Long to Sit on the Train

If you're working in Boston and you're ready for more space, the South Shore deserves a serious look. The region stretches south of the city along the coast, and depending on where you land, your commute to downtown can run as short as 35 minutes on the Greenbush Line or just over an hour from the outer towns. The tradeoff? More space, better schools, and a lifestyle that's hard to replicate anywhere near the city.

Here's the honest breakdown of commute options, home prices, and what you're actually getting for your money so you can make the call that fits your life and your budget.

How People Get to Boston from the South Shore

The South Shore has three main ways in:

  • MBTA Greenbush Line (Commuter Rail) - The South Shore's primary rail corridor, running from South Station through Weymouth and out to Scituate (Greenbush). The Kingston/Plymouth Line extends further south but west of The Greenbush Line. Trains run into South Station, putting you steps from the Financial District and the Seaport.
  • MBTA Ferry - The Hingham/Hull commuter ferry to Rowes Wharf and the Long Wharf is around 45 minutes and arguably the best commute in the region. You can also take it to Logan for the easiest trip to the airport. And there is a snack (and cocktail) bar.
  • MBTA Red Line - Quincy sits at the northern edge of the South Shore with Red Line access at Quincy Center and Quincy Adams, but South Shore commuters mostly rely on the Greenbush Line or ferry.

Town-by-Town Breakdown: Commute + Cost

Quincy: The Closest Entry Point to the South Shore

Quincy sits at the northern edge of the South Shore and offers both Red Line and commuter rail access making it one of the most transit-rich communities in the region. It's more urban than the towns further south, but it's where the South Shore begins for many buyers priced out of Boston neighborhoods. It also has a great mix of restaurants, there is something for everyone in Quincy Center and options at Marina Bay.

  • Median home price (2026): $750,000 (single-family); $500,000–$700,000 (condos)
  • Average price / sq ft: ~$470
  • Commute to downtown Boston: 20–30 min (Red Line); 30–40 min (commuter rail to South Station)
  • Drive time: 20–35 min (off-peak)
  • Lifestyle: Urban-suburban mix of restaurants, diverse neighborhoods, walkable pockets, and solid nightlife for a suburb
  • Best for: Buyers who want maximum transit options and the shortest possible commute; also strong for investors given rental demand

Weymouth: Rail Access Without the South Shore Price Tag

Weymouth is one of the most underrated buys on the South Shore. It has two commuter rail stops, the Wessagusset walk project nearing completion, and home prices that still haven't fully caught up to its neighbors.

  • Median home price (2026): $650,000–$825,000
  • Average price / sq ft: ~$420
  • Commute to South Station: ~35–42 min (Greenbush or Kingston/Plymouth Lines, East or South Weymouth stations)
  • Drive time: 25–40 min (off-peak)
  • Lifestyle: Commuter-friendly, walkable village centers, waterfront access, good mix of family neighborhoods and condo options
  • Best for: First-time buyers who need reliable rail access but can't stretch to Hingham pricing

Hingham: The Best Ferry Commute (for work!) in Massachusetts

Hingham's commuter ferry to Rowe's or Long Wharf is a genuine differentiator. ~45 minutes on the water beats most rail rides and it lands you steps from the Financial District and the Seaport. The Greenbush Line is easy to access at either the West Hingham or Nantasket Stations.

  • Median home price (2026): $1.4–$1.7 million
  • Average price / sq ft: ~$550
  • Commute to Boston: ~35-45 min or ~45-50 min (Greenbush commuter rail from Hingham station)
  • Drive time: 35–45 min (off-peak) but 60 min+ during peak
  • Lifestyle: Historic downtown, top-ranked schools, strong community feel, very walkable
  • Best for: Families relocating from city neighborhoods who want the full package, schools, walkability, and tight-knit community

Cohasset: Luxury Coastal Living with a Greenbush Commute

Cohasset is one of the most picturesque towns on the entire South Shore and offers oceanfront estates, a quaint village center, and strong architectural preservation. It also sits on the Greenbush Line, which makes it more accessible than its price tag might suggest. You're paying for the lifestyle, the views, and the address. It also is home to my favorite drive in the South Shore along the coast.

  • Median home price (2026): $1.8–$2.5 million
  • Average price / sq ft: ~$650+
  • Commute to South Station: ~50–55 min (Greenbush Line from Cohasset station)
  • Drive time: 40–50 min (off-peak)
  • Lifestyle: Upscale and scenic with Cohasset Harbor, great dining and shopping village, strong community identity, and some of the South Shore's most beautiful homes
  • Best for: Buyers who want true luxury coastal living without sacrificing rail access to the city

Hull: Ocean Views with Ferry Access at a Lower Price Point

Hull is Hingham's quieter peninsula neighbor and it benefits from the same ferry infrastructure. Residents catch the Hull ferry to Long Wharf or Logan airport. There are also boat schedules that go from Hull to Hingham conveniently scheduled around lunch or dinner if residents wanted to just pop over to the Shipyard for a quick meal.

  • Median home price (2026): $725,000–$900,000
  • Average price / sq ft: ~$475
  • Commute to Boston: ~25 min to Logan or Long Wharf
  • Drive time: 45 min+ (off-peak; the peninsula geography limits route options)
  • Lifestyle: Tight-knit beach community, Nantasket Beach, strong local identity, less commercial, more residential
  • Best for: Buyers seeking waterfront lifestyle and ferry access at a meaningful discount to Hingham; also popular for second homes and investors.

Scituate: Classic Beach Town with a Manageable Commute

Scituate sits on the Greenbush Line, which makes it accessible by rail at two different stations. The commute is a little longer than Weymouth or Hingham but the trade-off is the lifestyle is genuinely coastal: harbor dining, beach walks, and a village feel that doesn't disappear in winter.

  • Median home price (2026): $900,000–$1.2 million
  • Average price / sq ft: ~$475
  • Commute to South Station: ~55–60 min (Greenbush Line from North Scituate station)
  • Drive time: 55 min+ (off-peak)
  • Lifestyle: Fishing village meets active beach town, year-round community with strong local character and some great dining options.
  • Best for: Buyers who want true coastal living with rail access and can handle a longer commute in exchange for more lifestyle

Norwell: More Land, No Train

Norwell is a spacious suburb that sits between the coastline and Route 3. There's no MBTA commuter rail stations, so you're either driving to a station in a neighboring town or commuting by car. If you work from home most days, the calculus changes significantly.

  • Median home price (2026): $900,000–$1.1 million
  • Average price / sq ft: ~$420
  • Commute to Boston: 45–60 min (drive via Route 3 and I-93 Off Peak); or drive to commuter rail station nearby
  • Lifestyle: Quiet, private, and wooded with larger lots, newer construction, strong schools
  • Best for: Hybrid or mostly remote workers who prioritize space and school quality over transit access

Marshfield: Route 3 Town with Rail in the Mix

Marshfield sits further south and isn't directly on a commuter rail line with heavy service, but residents can access the Kingston/Plymouth Line from nearby. It's a legitimate option for buyers who are mostly remote but need occasional city access and want an active beach community lifestyle.

  • Median home price (2026): ~$800,000
  • Average price / sq ft: ~$420
  • Commute to South Station: ~65–75 min (drive to South Weymouth or Kingston station + rail)
  • Drive time: 50–65 min (off-peak); plan for 75+ in rush hour
  • Lifestyle: Active beach community, Route 3 access, seasonal energy, good school system
  • Best for: Mostly remote workers or 2–3 days/week commuters who want coastal lifestyle and more attainable pricing

Duxbury: The Furthest Out, Worth It for the Right Buyer

Duxbury commands premium pricing for its combination of historic coastal homes, sailing culture, and top-ranked schools. The commute is the longest on this list and there's no sugarcoating it. But for buyers with flexibility in their schedule, it's one of the most desirable communities on the entire South Shore.

  • Median home price (2026): $1.3–$1.6 million
  • Average price / sq ft: ~$525
  • Commute to South Station: 80+ min (Kingston/Plymouth Line from Kingston station + drive); or drive 65+ min off-peak
  • Lifestyle: Historic, sailing-oriented, quiet coastal community with exceptional schools
  • Best for: Buyers with schedule flexibility, partial remote work, or willing to trade commute time for lifestyle quality and long-term appreciation. Retirees ready for coastal life but still want to be somewhat close to the city.

  • Monthly MBTA Commuter Rail pass: ~$200–$400/month depending on zone
  • Ferry pass: Seasonal and annual options available — check MBTA Boat for current rates
  • Parking at stations: Limited and often waitlisted; factor in parking fees or a second-car strategy

  • Home insurance: Waterfront and coastal properties may require flood coverage, adding cost

FAQ: South Shore Living for Commuters

Which South Shore town has the shortest commute to Boston? Quincy offers the quickest access via the Red Line, about 20–25 minutes to Park Street. For Greenbush Line riders, Weymouth is the first stop out and lands you at South Station in roughly 35–42 minutes.

Is the Hingham ferry worth the extra cost? For many commuters, yes. It's ~45 minutes, avoids traffic entirely, and the experience beats sitting on a train.

Can I get by without a car from the South Shore? In Quincy, possibly. Everywhere else, a car is a practical necessity even if you commute by train, you'll probably want one for daily life. Is it doable? Sure, would I recommend it? No.

Which town gives the best value for commuters? Weymouth consistently punches above its weight with Greenbush Line access, revitalized neighborhoods, and lower prices than neighboring Hingham. Worth a close look before you write it off. And I personally think Hull is a hidden gem and worth a look if it fits your lifestyle.

How do I decide how far out I should go? Count your actual office days per week. If you're in Boston 4–5 days, prioritize Quincy or Weymouth. Two to three days? Hingham, Cohasset, Scituate, or Norwell make sense. Mostly remote? Marshfield and Duxbury open up.
